July 2020 Howard-Suamico School District COVID COMEBACK TASK FORCE “Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between.” Maya Angelou What will the educational format for the Howard-Suamico School District look like for the upcoming school year? A cross section of administrators, teachers, resources personnel, nurses, and nutritionists have been meeting in June and July with the sole purpose of championing the development of a school reopening plan that responds to community health requirements and reflects best educational practices to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of each of our students. The Instructional Core/Social and Emotional Learning action team is focused on the instructional format for grades K-4, 5-6, and 7-12 to determine the most practical, feasible, and appropriate strategies for each developmental stage. With schools providing the foundation for child and adolescent development, social and emotional skills will be just as important as the academic instruction. The individual needs and concerns of school professionals are also being addressed. Depending on the level of transmission within the community, school policies must be flexible, adaptive, thoughtful, inclusive, and creative in their methods of instruction. The Operations/Resources action team has targeted bus transportation, nutrition, building safety and security, disinfecting, and the overall space/facility usage within the district. One key concern is the level of “physical distancing” within each building to accommodate the student and still maintain the safety of students and staff. Classrooms and other instructional spaces, the serving of breakfast and lunch, and seating on buses will be modified for student safety. Besides the daily cleaning and disinfecting, teachers will emphasize personal hygiene methods to mitigate viral transmission. The Communication action team will share the information of our Task Force teams with students, families, and the community. The first draft of our school plan was released to the community on July 2nd through our district website, www.hssdschools.org/community/Covid19. This draft will undoubtedly change as we continue to get input from health officials at all levels and from members of the community who provided feedback by participating in “Thoughtexchange”, a tool used to gather input, located on the HSSD website. Along with the work of the action teams, your concerns will contribute to this decision-making process as the Task Force adapts and adjusts with new information. The HSSD Task Force is developing policies to meet the educational, social, and emotional needs of both students and staff in a rapidly changing pandemic environment. Resources from the professional health agencies and the DPI provide guidelines to meet the needs of all students as we move forward safely. DISTRICT CALENDARS were not published this year due to uncertainty of school year ABSENCES & HEALTH ROOM
Any absences, including doctor’s appointments that may cause your child to be late must be called in to our ATTENDANCE LINE at 662-7875. A message can be left at anytime on this line. If your student needs to leave school during the day for any reason please send a note with them. The student should bring this note to the office to get a pass. Sending a note helps to alleviate the interruption of the classroom when the parents get here and it is also more time effective for parents. Parents must come into school and sign their student out during the school day (7:55AM-2:38 PM). If you are picking your student up after school and they are unaware of this we ask that you call the office before 2:00 for the student to be notified. There is no need to call the office or send a note if the student knows they are being picked up after school. For pre-planned absences that exceed two or more full days, a pre-excused absence form must be submitted to the office at least 48 hours in advance of the absence. Advance Absence Notice form MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL: Parents can/should bring meds into school before school starts. The office is open the week of August 24th from 8am-3pm. Please be sure to have paperwork filled out before coming to school and a reminder that masks are required and please practice social distancing. ** Any medications (cough drops, over the counter/prescription meds including inhalers) to be taken at school must have a Parent Request & Authorization to Administer Medication Form on file. A link to these forms is below or forms can be picked up from the rack in the school office. Medications brought into school need to be in the original container indicating dosage and frequency. We do not accept expired medication. If you have questions please contact the office at 662-7871. District Medical Forms Administer OTC Medication Inhaled Asthma Medication Medical Procedure Prescriber's Medication Request PHY ED CLOTHES
Due to social distancing, student will not be changing for P.E. We do request them to have tennis shoes for their Phy Ed class days. APPROPRIATE SCHOOL DRESS
Please use good judgment when dressing for school. Clothing which is too tight, has inappropriate logos or writing on, exposes the body inappropriately, constitutes a safety hazard, or is a distraction will not be acceptable at school. The most recent concerns involve the length of shorts so please be aware that you will be asked to change if your shorts are not appropriate for school. Shoes with wheels are not safe and therefore not allowed. MAIN ENTRANCE/VISITOR CHECK-IN
For the safety of our students, all doors are locked at all times. When entering our school, you will need to press a buzzer, and be admitted by the secretary into the Main Office. Every visitor to Lineville needs to check in at the Main Office. NOTES from the NURSE:
ATTN 6th Grade PARENTS: "The Student Immunization Law requires that all students through grade 12 meet a minimum number of required immunizations https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p44021.pdf. For students in 6th grade this means that they need to have the adolescent booster of tetanus and pertussis/whooping cough or "Tdap" as well as their second "varicella" or chickenpox vaccine. These requirements can be waived only for health, religious or personal conviction reasons. You may contact your child's primary care physician, or possibly the Brown County Health Department at (920) 448-6400, your local Walgreens or CVS pharmacies to see if they are able to provide the immunizations your child needs. To remain compliant with the law, please provide the month, day and year that your child received the required immunization(s) or select one of the waiver options. Please let us know if you have a scheduled appointment in the coming weeks for your student. You may provide the immunization or appointment information by calling the school office at 662-7871 and one of the school secretaries can update your child's records in our system or send updated immunization info into school with your child. INDIVIDUAL HEALTH PLANS If your child has a medical condition that our staff should be aware of, it is important that parents contact the district nurse so that an Individual Health Plan can be created. Please contact our school nurse, Ann Spaeth at 920-662-7245 or [email protected]. If your child will be taking medication (OTC or prescription) please be sure that you have the appropriate medication forms filled out. FYI - cough drops need to be kept in the office and an OTC form must be on file in the office. District Medical Forms Administer OTC Medication Inhaled Asthma Medication Medical Procedure Prescriber's Medication Request PUBLIC HEALTH authorities recommend that teenagers and college-bound students be immunized against a potentially fatal bacterial infection called meningococcal disease, a type of meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading medical organizations recommends that all 11-12 years olds should be vaccinated with meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4). A booster shot is recommended for teens at age 16 to continue providing protection when their risk for meningococcal disease is highest. Teens who received MCV4 for the first time at age 13 through 15 years will need a one-time booster dose at 16 through18 years of age. If a teenager missed getting the vaccine altogether, they should ask the doctor about getting it now, especially if they are about to move into a college dorm or military barracks. To learn more about meningococcal disease, vaccine information, and public health resources visit www.cdc.gov/meningitis/index.htm. PULL TABS
Pull tabs are collected in the front office for the Ronald McDonald House in Milwaukee. Lineville no longer saves milk caps or Campbell soup labels but we do send them on to an elementary school in the district if we get some. |
