Are you looking for strategies to use with your reader at home? Start a Book Club: Form a book club with family members, your child’s friends and their parents, or just the two of you. Select a book together and establish small reading assignments, (for example one or two chapters at a time). Choose a specific “meeting” time, and place such as a weekly trip to a park (during the warmer months) or just chat at home over zoom, discussing the book. Be sure to focus on talking about your ideas and themes in the book, using examples from the book. After you finish one book, pick another book by the same author, about a similar topic or in the same genre and compare them. Compare Perspectives: Read about an event you and your child attended, or write your own accounts of an event you shared. Read the two pieces and then compare the differences between them the perspectives from which they were written. Read and Research: Help your child come up with a question about a topic of interest. Then work together to read a variety of sources to find the answer. Vary your Reading: Read different genres of texts with your child. For example, pick a poem or play and read it together and talk about the ideas, perspectives and themes of it. Read two poems about one topic and compare them. FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD
March 2021 By the Community, for the Community: HSSD Renew and Invest Referendum, April 6, 2021 With guidance from two community surveys and the commendable work of a 40-member volunteer Community Task Force, the Howard-Suamico School District Board of Education unanimously voted to bring two referendum questions to our community on April 6, 2021. A key recommendation from community leaders on the Task Force and accepted by the Board was a lower tax levy rate as part of the referendum plan. On January 25, the Board announced its commitment to a lower $8.99 mill rate for the next seven years if the referendum plan is approved. Question 1 asks to renew the operational revenue limit override at a reduced rate of $5 million per year for five years. The funding would continue the district’s ability to maintain smaller class sizes, retain and recruit high-quality employees, and support annual facilities maintenance. This new operational referendum would replace the current referendum when it expires in 2023. Question 2 is for facilities updates in all eight district schools, including HVAC system updates to improve air quality. Additionally, plans for major renovations at Bay View Middle School and Forest Glen Elementary School include new physical education additions and updated learning environments. We continue to be grateful for the ongoing engagement of families, students, staff, and community members in our referendum planning. To learn more, join us at an upcoming Community Information Session at Bay View Middle School March 18 and 31, visit our website at www.hssdschools.org/referendum, and review the informational mailers sent to all residents this month. A virtual community information session webinar can be found on the district website. Absentee voting is available from March 16 until April 1. Visit https://myvote.wi.gov/ for more information. In person voting on Election Day is Tuesday, April 6 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. We will see you at the polls!
