October 2020 2020-2021 Howard-Suamico School District Budget During our annual meeting September 28, community members received a detailed review of the school district’s 2020-2021 budget and voted to adopt it as presented. During the meeting on October 26, the Board of Education approved a total tax levy of $30,375,445, which supports a district budget of $91,000,528. This levy will result in the school’s portion of our property taxes remaining stable at $9.19. The budget, just as in year’s past, establishes that we continue to value innovation, investing in our staff, driving academic performance for every student, and fiscal stability. Board members have engaged in continuous legislative advocacy efforts, specifically pertaining to the State’s biennium budget, which positively impacted the students of the Howard-Suamico School District. The advocacy efforts have recently led to partnerships with local municipalities utilizing federal grant dollars to purchase electrostatic sprayers, cafeteria tables with benches, expanded WiFi at Meadowbrook and Suamico Elementary, and MERV air filters. Over the next few months Board members will continue to review the budget and plan strategically for the future. Another survey will be sent out later this year to gather additional information as referendum planning continues. ATTN 6th Grade PARENTS: "The Student Immunization Law requires that all students through grade 12 meet a minimum number of required immunizations https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p44021.pdf. For students in 6th grade this means that they need to have the adolescent booster of tetanus and pertussis/whooping cough or "Tdap" as well as their second "varicella" or chickenpox vaccine. These requirements can be waived only for health, religious or personal conviction reasons. You may contact your child's primary care physician, or possibly the Brown County Health Department at (920) 448-6400, your local Walgreens or CVS pharmacies to see if they are able to provide the immunizations your child needs. To remain compliant with the law, please provide the month, day and year that your child received the required immunization(s) or select one of the waiver options. Please let us know if you have a scheduled appointment in the coming weeks for your student. You may provide the immunization or appointment information by calling the school office at 662-7871 and one of the school secretaries can update your child's records in our system or send updated immunization info into school with your child. PUBLIC HEALTH authorities recommend that teenagers and college-bound students be immunized against a potentially fatal bacterial infection called meningococcal disease, a type of meningitis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other leading medical organizations recommends that all 11-12 years olds should be vaccinated with meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4). A booster shot is recommended for teens at age 16 to continue providing protection when their risk for meningococcal disease is highest. Teens who received MCV4 for the first time at age 13 through 15 years will need a one-time booster dose at 16 through18 years of age. If a teenager missed getting the vaccine altogether, they should ask the doctor about getting it now, especially if they are about to move into a college dorm or military barracks. To learn more about meningococcal disease, vaccine information, and public health resources visit www.cdc.gov/meningitis/index.htm. |
